Sources disagree on this specification

The published figures for ImmiAccount uploads do not reconcile. Pixel dimensions are variously given as 1200 x 1600, 900 x 1125 and at least 600 x 900, and the file size ceiling as 1 MB, 2 MB or 3.5 MB against a 70 KB floor. Note also that 1200 x 1600 is a 3:4 frame and does not match the 35 x 45 mm shape those same sources specify. Rather than pick one, this tool targets the intersection: 900 x 1125 clears every stated pixel minimum and keeps the 35 x 45 mm ratio, and the 70 KB to 1 MB band sits inside every stated range. A file that satisfies the intersection satisfies all of them. Read your visa subclass instructions, which override this.

What causes rejections

  • Reusing a US 2 x 2 inch square photo. ImmiAccount rejects it on dimensions alone, and this is the most common single error for applicants who have recently applied to the United States.
  • Letting a messaging app compress the photo. WhatsApp and email routinely push a file under the 70 KB floor, and the resulting upload fails for being too small rather than too large.
  • Uploading HEIC or WebP. ImmiAccount wants JPEG, and a renamed HEIC is still a HEIC.
  • Wearing a white or very pale top against a light background, which removes the separation between subject and background.
  • Photographing or scanning an existing printed photo instead of using the original digital file.

Passing every automated check here does not mean your application will be accepted. It means the file will not fail for a technical reason.

How your image is handled

Your file is read into this page, decoded, drawn onto a canvas at the target size and re-encoded. Every step runs on your device. No network request carries the image, so nothing is stored on our side and nothing can be recovered from us later.

Re-encoding through a canvas also converts the file to the sRGB colour space and strips the original EXIF metadata, including any location tag your camera wrote into it.

What size should an Australia visa photo be?
The physical standard is 35 x 45 mm. The digital figures published for ImmiAccount conflict with each other, which is why this tool targets a size that satisfies all of them rather than picking one. If your visa subclass instructions state a specific size, that figure wins.
Does Australia need a white background?
Not strictly. Home Affairs accepts a plain light background and explicitly permits light grey and pale blue, which is more permissive than the US or Canada. A plain white wall is still a safe choice.
Do I need printed photos?
Almost certainly not. The overwhelming majority of Australian visa applications are lodged online through ImmiAccount with a single digital upload. Printed photographs apply only to a paper lodgement at a visa application centre, and inkjet prints are not accepted for that route.
